Awkward
November 6th, 2010 by GrubmeyerToday I walked into a local restaurant and saw somebody working there from my high school years. A girl I had graduated with over 10 years ago, but had not seen in a very long time. Before now I had not given much thought to what I’d do if I ever run into my old school mates. Today I had that opportunity and I did what any other person would do to avoid awkward conversation. I kept my mouth shut.
It’s not that I didn’t want to talk to her. I’m pretty friendly and can usually hold a conversation about any number of things. I just didn’t really have anything to say. I imagined the conversation we’d have, something like:
Me: “Hi, are you so-and-so from such-and-such School?”
So-and-So: “Yes, how did you know? Who are you?”
Me: “I’m Elijah, we graduated together.”
SaS:” Oh, hey, hi, how’ve you been?”
Me: “Great! And how’s things been for you?”
blah blah blah, conversation about nothing….then….Awkward.
If I don’t really have something to say to someone of something that would interest the both of us, I usually prefer to keep my mouth shut.
And I think that’s all I have to say about that. I don’t know where I was going with this, I just wanted to share.
